Libanese has a dream: to conquer Rome. To accomplish this unprecedented feat, he sets up a ruthless and organized gang. The evolution of the gang and alternation of its leaders (il Libanese, il Freddo, and Dandi) develop over twenty-five years, intertwining in an indissoluble way with the dark history of Italy’s Mafia killings, terrorist bombings and state conspiracies. A crime drama based on the eponymous novel by Giancarlo De Cataldo.

This free film event is presented by Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds Cineforum, Welcome 2 Italian Language and the University of Leeds. It is the third of a three part series called Parole e immagini: A journey in Italian film inspired by literature, which was launched at Leeds Lit Fest.

Parole e immagini: A journey through Italian film inspired by literature

Leeds Cineforum is back with a new three-part film series, Parole e immagini: A journey through Italian film inspired by literature.

This new film series will take you on a journey through Italian culture, bringing together two belle arti: literature and cinema. With our first screening launching at Leeds Lit Fest, we present a programme of Italian films inspired by either a work of literature or a famous writer. You will have the opportunity to not only watch the films we show, but to learn more about the works and writers that inspired them. Offering accompanying events such as discussions with authors, readings from literary works and director Q&As, we invite you to go deeper into Italian culture and the art that has emerged from it.

Our diverse project partners each bring a unique perspective to the programme – from the curatorial expertise of the Hyde Park Picture House, to the pedagogic focuses of Welcome 2 Italian Language and the University of Leeds. These perspectives offer a holistic approach to the programme and bring together cinephile, Italophile and Italian communities in Leeds.

Join us for our first screening: I’m not Scared / Io non ho paura (Gabriele Salvatores, 2004) on Sun 27 February at Leeds University Union. Book your ticket through the Hyde Park Picture House website.
